Matsuyama is a city situated in the Shikoku region of Japan. It is also the capital of Ehime Prefecture. Matsuyama when translated literally means a mountain of pine trees. It first became a city on the first of December in 1889.

The city of Matsuyama occupies an area of approximately four hundred and twenty eight square kilometres or around one hundred and sixty five square miles. It has a total population of over half a million people and a population density of around one thousand one hundred and sixteen people per square kilometre.

Some of the major attractions in Matsuyama include the Matsuyama castle and also a museum called Shiki Kinenkan. There are also 8 temples which are a hit with tourists. With its numerous hot springs the city is also a popular health resort and the earliest hot spring bath spot in Japan is actually located in Matsuyama.

Famous people hailing from Matsuyama have also made the city popular. For instance Masaoka Shiki who was a famous writer of Haiku poems resided in Matsuyama and his house, popularly referred to as the Shiki-do, is a tourist attraction.

To get to Matsuyama from inside Japan one can travel by air from airports in Tokyo, Fukuoka, Nagoya, Osaka, and Okinawa. There are also international flights from Asian cities such as Seoul in South Korea and Shanghai in China. From the airport one can get around by use of the numerous car hire services readily available at the airport or use a bus that picks passengers from the airport every twenty minutes.

One can also get to Matsuyama by bus from Tokyo, a journey that takes around twelve hours. Once in the city of Matsuyama one can travel around by taxis or just rent a car from car hire operators. To use car hire service vehicles one must be in possession of a Japanese driving license or an International Driving Permit.
