Roatan Island is the largest of the Honduras' Bay Islands. The Bay Islands were discovered by Christopher Columbus on his fourth and final journey to the New World. The Honduras Bay Island consist of the Islas de la Bahia which consists of Roatan, Guanaja, Utila and other small islands the Cayos Cochinos and the Swan Islands.
Roatan is a small island. It's only 60 kilometers long, and at its widest is less than 8 kilometers wide. It can be reached from mainland Honduras by either aircraft or by ferry. The tiny island has a population of 17,000.
Coxen Hole, also called Roatan City or Roatan Town, is located on the west end of the island. Coxen Hole is the most populated city on the island as well as its capital. Compared to other towns on the island, Coxen Hole is lacking in tourist attraction, although it is the center of Roatan politics. Located in Coxen Hole, is the Juan Manuel Galvez International Airport and the Coxen Hole stadium. The name Coxen is said to be taken from the pirate John Coxen.
East of Coxen Hole is French Harbor. It's perhaps the most bustling community found on Roatan and the economic hub of the island. On the outskirts of French Harbor is an Iguana reserve with over 2,800 Iguanas. To the northwest of Coxen Hole is Sandy Bay, the cultural center of the Roatan. It contains several museums as well as a marine reserve.
Roatan is also noted for its wonderful scuba diving and sandy beaches. It is located near the world's second largest barrier reef.
