Located about 520 miles north the US-Canada border and about 480 miles from Manitoba's provincial capital Winnipeg, Thompson is the largest city in northern Manitoba. It is the centre of trade and service in the region and is often referred to as the Hub of the North. The gateway to the Hub of the North is Thompson Airport, situated about five miles north of the city across the Burntwood River. Much of the area is beautiful raw nature, but is sparsely populated. Renting a car would be the best way to take advantage of the scenic drives this region has to offer and you should compare rates before booking your vehicle.
Who to Book With
Thompson Airport currently has two car hire companies operating within its premises. These are Enterprise and National. Many more car rental firms have offices in downtown Thompson including Hertz and Enterprise. The desks of these rental firms are right by the main doors of the airport near the entrance of the restaurant.
Need to Know Essentials
When collecting your rented car, the following items will be asked of you:
- Driver's licence
- ID (which will indicate that you are 21 years or above)
- Booking receipt
- Credit card of the renter (enough credit for the deposit)
Driving
Driving around the vast province of Manitoba means that towns, cities and petrol stations may be few and far between. Thus, before you set off, you need to check the condition of your vehicle. It must be in tip-top shape. Check the spark plugs, ignition wires, filters, brakes (very important especially in winter), cooling system (for the radiator) and naturally, the oil. Because of the harsh weather in Manitoba, it is common to see construction projects and repairs along or beside the roads happening outside the winter months. Slow down when passing by construction areas and watch out for workers and their construction equipment. The speed limit for highways is 37mph; 19mph to 25mph for built-up areas.

Public transport can be limited in such sparsely populated place. The best option is to rent your own car to pick up right at the airport. Thompson has a railway station but it does not have station servicing the airport nor does the train make stops in town. The station is for long-distance trains only. To reach the town from the airport, you simply need to drive south along Mystery Lake Road.
