Going back into the history of Edmonton and Calgary you will find the interesting Edmonton North - Calgary Trail. This is a section of road that was named in honor of the trail that was formed in about 1873 to transport fur from one city to the other. The fur trade during this time was the main economy in the region and very important to both the Fort of Edmonton and the Fort of Calgary. Today the Queen Elizabeth 2 Highway is where this trail used to run, but in order for it to be preserved the southbound section of the road that is still in Edmonton, is called the Edmonton North - Calgary Trail and in Calgary, there is a small feeder road just off the highway that is called the Edmonton Trail.
