The motto for the town, 'Like the rose, I flourish', originates from the early 20th century when the town of Richmond Hill was a rose-growing center. During that time, it was called Canada's 'Rose Capital'. Today Richmond Hill's motto is a little north, a little nicer, which refers to the small, quiet lifestyle of Richmond in opposition to the city life of Toronto to the south.

There are more than 160 parks located in and near Richmond Hill. Most of them are small urban parks, although Green Sports Centre & Park is the largest in the area, and features baseball diamonds, an Amphitheatre, a skateboard park and a skating rink.

For tourists with a passion for history visit the Richmond Hill Heritage Center, as well as the Museum of Contemporary Arts and the Textile museum of Canada. There is also the David Dunlap Observatory, well worth a visit.

Lake Wilcox is most definitely worth a visit, and is situated only a 13 minute drive south of Richmond Hill. The park is great for relaxing and strolling around, and there are three parks surrounding it, perfect for picnics or sunbathing during the summer months.
