Barbados Airport Guide

Sir Grantley Adams International Airport is the main air hub for all of Barbados. While the airport was originally named Seawell Airport before it was rededicated in honour of the first Premier of Barbados. Grantley Adams is the main source of air transport into and out of Barbados.

The airport enjoys direct services to and from destinations in the United States, Canada, South America, and Europe. Express services are available to the rest of the Caribbean islands, as well. Many of the aircraft using Grantley Adams are small charter aircraft and luxury jet transports.

Grantley Adams just went through a major expansion. The airport's infrastructure is being upgraded with 100 million dollar expansion program. The runways, taxiways, and parking have been upgraded, and several private land tracts have been appropriated by the government in order to expand security perimeters around the airport. There is a new terminal, which is due to increase to total number of passengers that the airport can handle at any given time.

The airport houses two terminal buildings as well as a single runway. The runway itself is situated on the east-west axis of the island, and is 3,400 meters in length, which means it can handle even the largest commercial aircraft in the world.

There are also car hire services at the airport, allowing air passengers to travel the island at their convenience. Because the ease of using a hire car on the island allows travelers to venture further out than is typical, adventurous passengers can get the best of the island experience by traveling outside of the main tourist zones.
