Margaret River is quickly becoming one of the most famous towns in Australia. Located nearly 300 kilometers south of Perth, Margaret River is one of the premier wine producing regions in Australia. Thanks to the wine production facilities and vineyards, as well as the picturesque setting, Margaret River plays host to nearly 1 million tourists each year. The Margaret River Wine Region was once known primarily for its agricultural products and timber production, but in recent decades, Australia's wine producers have taken center stage, rivaling the popularity of some French and American producers.
Margaret River lies along a river of the same name, and while it is said to be a coastal city, Margaret River actually lays 10 kilometers inland. The Margaret River extends nearly 50 kilometers inland from the town. Margaret River is popular not only with wine enthusiasts, but with naturalists, as well. Because of the unique landscape of the area, many species of flora and fauna can be found there. Cavers also have an excellent time around the Margaret River region, simply because of the hundreds of large caves found in the area. While many of these are only open by permit, there are several that are easily accessible to the public.
Visitors to the area can do a proper car hire and tour the surrounding wine producing region which, although it accounts for under 5 percent of the wine grapes grown in Australia, does manage to produce more than 25 percent of the country's premium wines. There are many large wine producing interests in the area, but they don't hold exclusive rights. There are smaller, artisanal wine producers in the area, which while producing much lower quantities of wine do manage a brisk business because of their effective marketing strategies.
