Serving South Australia’s capital, Adelaide Airport lies next to West Beach, less than four miles from the city centre. Australia’s fifth-busiest airport caters to over seven million passengers a year, many of which use airport buses and shuttles to access their hotels. A more convenient option, however, is to make use of car hire at Adelaide Airport, with the drive into the city taking just 15 minutes.

Who to Book With
The ground level of the terminal features car hire desks for Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Thifty, with vehicles kept at a new multi-floor car park nearby. There are also local, off-site suppliers which offer less convenient service.

You will need to present the following documents at vehicle pick up:

- Booking voucher
- Driver’s licence
- A secondary form of ID, such as a passport or utility bill
- The credit card which was used to make the booking

Driving
The roads around Adelaide are in reasonable condition, but drivers should note that distances between destinations are often vast and should prepare accordingly. It is important to refuel when the opportunity arises when travelling in remote areas, with some routes only accessible via four-wheel drive. Most rental cars here are automatic transmission, so bear this in mind when choosing a vehicle. Drivers should avoid city centre driving during peak congestion periods and abide by speed limits as speed cameras are present in all states. Some routes are tolled.

Transport

Taxis and limousines, shuttle and public buses, and car rental can all be used to get from the airport to the city, with the latter offering the greatest convenience for those with luggage. The drive into the city from the airport takes just 15 minutes without stops.

Taxis
Terminal 1 has a taxi rank at the entrance to the ground level. Taxis departing from here charge a £1.30 airport pick-up fee in addition to the fare.

Buses
The Skylink Airport Shuttle has scheduled services between the airport, Keswick Interstate Railway Terminal costs approx. £2.60 and Adelaide city centre around £5.20. The Adelaide Airport Flyer offers a door-to-door minibus service to Adelaide locations and beyond, with reservations advised at least 48 hours in advance. JetBus public bus services leave every 15 minutes from outside Terminal 1’s Domestic area and travel to the city and coastal suburbs. Fares run between £3 and £1.80, depending on time of travel. Bus journeys from the airport to the CBD usually take no more than 25 minutes.

Facilities

Terminals
The recently developed, single terminal caters to both domestic and international traffic to destinations within Australia and in Asia and the Middle East, respectively. It is frequently praised for its passenger amenities, including lounges, shops and wireless internet.

Parking
A new multi-floor, undercover parking facility caters to the short-term parking needs of up to 1,640 vehicles. It is directly connected to the terminal and charges around £20 for up to 24 hours and £4 for less than one hour of parking. Long-term parking is available at a seven-minute walk or short, free shuttle bus ride from the terminal. Rates here are around £15 per day or £30 for three days.

Wi-Fi
Terminal 1 offers free wireless internet access to passengers via AAL. There are also self-service internet kiosks next to Hungry Jack’s which accept coin or credit card payment.

Information Services
Burgundy-clad Airport Ambassadors roam the terminal to provide assistance to passengers. The Information and Tourist Bookings desk is located on Level 0, across from International Arrivals.

Accessibility
Drop offs can be made near the new multi-floor, short-stay car park, with Customer Service Officers able to meet passengers with reduced mobility to provide assistance. Select check-in desks have been lowered for wheelchair users, while others have Counter Hearing Systems for those with hearing difficulties. People movers and lifts are available within the terminal, while taxis which can accommodate wheelchairs are available outside.

Restaurants and Bars
Most eating and drinking options are located on Level 2, including the 1862 Bar for drinks, Café Terra Rose for coffee, Dreamy Donuts for sweet snacks and Hungry Jack’s (Burger King) for burgers. For a sit-down meal, Icons of South Australia offers tasty regional foods and wines.

VIP Lounges
There are no public VIP lounges at Adelaide Airport.

Money and ATMs
Three Travelex desks offering foreign currency exchange services are present in Terminal 1, both before and after security. Additionally, there are Foreign Exchange ATMs on the ground floor and Level 2 alongside regular ATMs.

Shopping
Just about all of Adelaide Airport’s shopping outlets are located on Level 2, including the Airport Pharmacy (Shop 23) for sunscreen and over-the-counter medication, Australian Way (Shop 9) for souvenirs and aboriginal crafts, Blue Illusion (Shop 18) for women’s fashion, Duty Free Stores Australia (shops 14-16) for tax-free alcohol, tobacco and cosmetics, and Newslink (Shop 5) for reading material.
