Cusco, also known as Cuzco, is located in south eastern Peru and is home to a population of 300,000. It is one of the highest cities on earth at an altitude of 3,300 metres.
Founded in the 11th century, Cusco was the capital of the Incas. The city came under Spanish rule in the 16th century when it was sacked by Pizarro. Within the historic town centre, you can visit the remains of many Incan structures, such as the Temple of the Sun and the palace.
Cusco has many amenities for visitors including: hotels, shops and restaurants. Car hire can be found in the centre of town from: Av El Sol 808. While it may be challenging, a car hire will allow your group to explore locations off the beaten track and tour the area independently. Before setting off in your car hire vehicle, ensure you have a decent map as well as a good Spanish phrase book.
The city is best known for its access via train and footpath to Macchu Picchu. This pre-Columbian site, developed by the Incas in 1450, can be found on a mountain ridge. Its hidden location, some 50 miles from Cusco, meant that it was never destroyed by the Spanish. It offers stunning views of the Urubamba, or Sacred, Valley.
A car hire can enable your party to reach other picturesque Sacred Valley villages. These remote towns seldom see visitors, so make an excellent day trip in your car hire. Paucartambo is 68 miles northeast of Cusco and is a tranquil colonial town set in the mountains. Just 28 miles further will take you to Tres Cruces (Three Crosses), a sacred Incan location. Located at an altitude of 4,000m on a rocky mountain edge, it offers stunning views over the green Amazon rain forest.
