Set on the Italian mainland adjacent to the Veneta Lagoon, Venice Airport hosts more than eight million travellers each year, many of whom are headed to catch a glimpse of timeless Venetian culture and the city’s one-of-a-kind floating geography. The facility is also known as Venice Marco Polo Airport and is only about 20 minutes from Venice proper and about 35 minutes from the sun-soaked beaches of Lido de Jesolo by car hire. However, passengers can also get away from the airport via taxi, bus services and to some destinations, by boat.
Who to Book With
Venice Airport offers a good range of car hire brands. These include Italian firms Locauto and Maggiore, in addition to global brands Europcar, Sixt, Budget, Hertz and Avis. Check-in areas can be found on the arrivals level.

Driving
Italian road rules are generally on par with the United Kingdom and places elsewhere in Europe. Italy drives on the right; speed limits are capped at 81mph (130kph) on motorways and 31mph (50kph) on city streets. Be prepared for a large number of motorbikes in some urban areas. Seatbelts are compulsory for all persons in the vehicle. Parking may be particularly difficult in Mestre and other areas surrounding the Via Liberta Bridge to Venice. Street parking regulations are strictly enforced.
Refer to our Italy travel guide for more information about driving in the region.
Ground transport at Venice Airport is available in a number of different forms. Car rental may be particularly advantageous for those heading to Mestre and nearby beach destinations. Additionally, taxis are always available though fairly pricey, whilst scheduled bus departures provide connections to a handful of destinations including Venice and Mestre. Finally, shuttles can connect passengers to local rail stations and water taxi service is on offer to several points in Venice and elsewhere in the lagoon.
