Car Hire

The air arrivals hub for the historic Italian city of Pisa is Galileo Galilei Airport, also known as Pisa-San-Guisto Airport. Located under a mile from the city’s central district, the airport has its own rail station for fast transportation to the downtown area, as well as regular bus links and a plethora of taxis. Car hire in Pisa Airport is easily arranged and is essential for touring this beautiful corner of Italy with its ancient towns and glorious countryside.

Who to Book With
Ten car rental companies, including Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt and four Italian car hire firms, are found at the Car Rentals Terminal, five minutes’ walk or a short shuttle bus trip from the Arrivals exit. Over 1,500 cars, minibuses and vans are offered in total, although pre-booking is advised, especially of you’re arriving on a late flight.

Driving
Italy drives on the right and Italian drivers are famed for their use of horns, extravagant gestures and flowery language while at the wheel. Yet driving here is a unique and, for many, enjoyable cultural experience. Speed limits are rigorously enforced (but frequently ignored by local drivers), with autostrada speeds regulated at 80mph, dual carriageways at 68mph, rural roads at 56mph and urban roads at 30mph. Motoring offences attract expensive on-the-spot fines and radar traps are common. The carrying of visibility vests and warning triangles is compulsory, as is the wearing of seatbelts for all occupants, if fitted. Petrol stations are frequent, although the unmanned versions may not accept card payment, and most are closed between 12:00 and 15:00. Parking in cities and towns is difficult, and most historic centres are now pedestrianised.

Transport

Pisa Airport is one of the few Italian regional airports with its own rail station, set just 50 yards from the terminal, adjacent to the Check-in hall. Trains connect with Pisa’s main rail station and Florence, some 50 miles away. Frequent buses run to Pisa and other local destinations, and taxis to the city are reasonably priced.

Trains
The train service at Pisa Airport is directly linked to the vast Italian rail network operated by Trenitalia, giving efficient, fast public transport options for non-drivers. Tickets can be purchased at the Arrivals hall’s information office, with the journey to downtown taking just a few minutes and costing around £1. Fast trains also run to Florence from the airport, taking around 1 hour and costing around £7.50.

Taxis
Official metered taxis at the airport are provided by Cotapi, the local taxi owners’ cooperative, and are the most expensive way to travel. The company also operates a pre-booked radio cab service. Fares are shown on the meter at the journey’s end and there are extra charges for night travel, oversized baggage and public holiday travel.

Buses
Terravision buses leave from outside the Arrivals area for Florence, a journey of around 1 hour, 10 minutes at a cost of £8.50. Bus travel to Livorno is by bus number 101 from outside the Arrivals exit and costs £2.50, and the short journey to Pisa’s central area is via the CPT Pisa bus, which runs every 10 minutes and costs less than £1.

Facilities

Terminals
Pisa’s Galileo Galilei Airport has a single terminal serving 4.5 million passengers a year. Low-cost carrier Ryanair is its main carrier, offering flights from London-Stansted, Dublin, Edinburgh, Leeds-Bradford, Liverpool and East Midlands regional airports. EasyJet flies from London’s Gatwick and Luton, and British Airways flies from Heathrow. Jet2 serves Belfast and Manchester, and Delta Air Lines offer a flight from New York.

Parking
Over 3,000 public parking places are provided in four separate areas, with P1 and P4 used for long-stay, multi–storey P2 used for medium-length stays and P3 dedicated to short-stay parking. Parking in all car parks is free for the disabled. Charges at P3, a minute’s walk from the terminal, are scaled between £1.50 for the first hour up to £25 for 24 hours. At multi-storey P2, it’s £1.50 for 1 hour up to £18 per 24 hours and at P1 it’s £1.50 for the first hour up to £7.50 for six hours, with special rates per week.

Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi internet access is provided across the terminal by Devitalia, with charges payable online by credit card or via a prepaid card purchased in the terminal.

Accessibility
Both the short-stay and multi-storey car parks close to the terminal offer free reserved spaces for disabled passengers. Wheelchairs are available on request, as are adapted toilets, dedicated seating in the passenger areas, elevators, facilitated security clearance, ramps and lifts to facilitate wheelchair boarding. Personal assistance can be arranged to cover all aspects of arrival and deplaning or departure and boarding.

Restaurants and Bars
Located in the public area before security you’ll find Café Vasari, open between 05:30 and 24:00, as well as the Red Baron pub and the Pizza Chef eatery. On the first floor is Puccini Self Service Restaurant, the table-service Mascagni Restaurant, a popular steak house and the Tuscany Grill. In the Departures hall is a bar serving alcohol, soft drinks and appetisers, and there’s a second branch of Pizza Chef as well as several coffee bars.

Money and ATMs
Banking services, including currency exchange, are found on the terminal’s first floor and ATMs are located adjacent to the bank and near the escalator on the ground floor.

Shopping
The Galilei Shopping Centre is available to all airport users and features over 20 outlets offering Italian fashions, accessories, gifts, souvenirs and more. Beyond security in the Departures lounge is the La Corte shopping arcade with its stores, a hairdresser and beauty shop, and duty-free outlets.
